Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is investigating a potential security breach involving up to $5.8 billion in digital assets, BleepingComputer reported. If the theft is confirmed, it will mark the largest cryptocurrency hack in history. [1]
The suspected breach has prompted immediate mitigation steps from major digital asset firms. Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle have already frozen more than $2.3 billion in assets linked to the incident, according to BleepingComputer. [1]
The potential losses would surpass previous record incidents. BleepingComputer reported that if confirmed, the amount far exceeds the $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit by North Korean hackers in February 2025, which was previously the largest confirmed crypto heist on record. [1]
Binance Holdings Ltd. was founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao after launching an initial coin offering for its native BNB token that raised $15 million. The exchange initially operated from China before moving to Japan and Malta, and it currently has no official global headquarters. [2][3]
