The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center information technology staff detected a cybersecurity threat around 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Gizmodo reported. Network containment efforts began immediately following the discovery. The affected system operates the only Level I trauma center in New Mexico. [1]
The cyberattack forced the health system to divert ambulance traffic to other facilities in Albuquerque and Santa Fe between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., according to Gizmodo and inkl. Outpatient surgeries and appointments were also suspended for the rest of the day while technical teams secured the network. [1][2]
Critical electronic systems were brought back online by the following afternoon, Gizmodo reported. Official updates confirmed that all facilities returned to full operational status and resumed receiving ambulance traffic. [1]
A hacker group claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, according to Gizmodo. The group stated that it would keep the stolen data but offered to provide the decryption key specifically for the hospital sector. [1]
