Researchers Demonstrate SPECTER Attack Leaking Data From Air Gapped Computers
Academics at Korea University showed that malware can leak sensitive data from air-gapped systems by manipulating USB power-management settings.

Researchers at Korea University demonstrated a new data-exfiltration technique called SPECTER that extracts information from air-gapped computers, Hackread reported. The method manipulates USB power-management settings to create covert transmission signals. Air-gapped computers are physically isolated from external networks to prevent unauthorized data transfers. [1]
According to Hackread, the attack was developed by Hyeongjun Choi, Ji Hyuk Jung, and Ji Won Yoon in Seoul, South Korea. The SPECTER technique allows malware on a compromised system to transmit sensitive information by making changes to phone charging and controlling peripheral power. Routine USB control operations are used to send the data even when standard network connections are absent. [1]
Integrated circuits such as central processing units, graphics cards, chipsets, and storage drives require computer cooling to remove waste heat and prevent hardware failure or temporary malfunction. Data transmission itself involves embedding variations into a medium to carry information. [3][4]
Hackread reported that the research demonstrates how covert channels can bypass physical isolation controls on targeted hardware. The findings highlight how attackers with initial access to an air-gapped device can use standard peripheral controls to bypass traditional network restrictions. [1]
In short
- SPECTER leaks data from air-gapped computers through USB power-management controls.
- The attack technique was created by Hyeongjun Choi, Ji Hyuk Jung, and Ji Won Yoon of Korea University.
- The method transmits signals through connected peripherals and phone charging changes.
