Ransomware attacks reached their highest ever quarterly volume in the third quarter of 2026, InfoSecurity Magazine reported. According to an analysis by research firm Comparitech, 2627 claimed attacks occurred between July and September 2026. This total represents a 27 percent increase from the second quarter of 2026 and a 61 percent increase compared to the third quarter of 2025. [1]
The finance and technology sectors experienced the sharpest surge in target volume during this period. InfoSecurity Magazine noted that ransomware incidents in the finance industry rose by 72 percent compared to the previous quarter. Attacks targeting the technology sector increased by 70 percent over the same timeframe. [1]
Critical infrastructure and other key industries also faced growing target activity. InfoSecurity Magazine reported that education and healthcare organizations were among the other critical sectors that recorded significant rises in ransomware incidents during the quarter. [1]
Ransomware is a class of malicious software that holds victim data hostage until an extortion payment is made. This activity typically involves encrypting private files, exfiltrating data with threats of public release, or both. Payment is usually demanded in cryptocurrency or prepaid store cards to complicate law enforcement tracking. [4]
Victims can sometimes recover encrypted files without paying extortion demands. Successful decryption without payment can occur through flaws in the malware code, leaked cryptographic keys, or instances where the software fails to properly encrypt the targeted systems. [4]
