Google has released security updates for its Chrome web browser that add new warnings against ClickFix social engineering attacks and deceptive websites. BleepingComputer, SecurityWeek, and The Hacker News all reported that the new protection features rely on server side Gemini analysis within the browser's Enhanced Protection mode. ZDNET Security and BetaNews also reported that Chrome is introducing a new warning for suspicious sites that display deceptive patterns. [1][2][3][4][7]
ClickFix is a social engineering technique where bad actors trick users into copying and pasting malicious commands directly into their computer terminal, according to The Hacker News and Chrome Unboxed. BleepingComputer and SecurityWeek reported that Chrome will now alert users when they copy suspicious commands from these attacks. Android Authority noted that this protection works by sharing clipboard data with Google servers. [1][3][4][9][10]
The new protections are integrated into Enhanced Protection, a Safe Browsing setting that Google first introduced in 2020. SecurityWeek reported that over 1 billion Chrome users had enabled this setting as of last year. BleepingComputer and SecurityWeek both noted that Google claims Enhanced Protection makes users ten times safer from phishing, social engineering, and notification abuse compared with Standard Protection. [1][3]
Google Chrome was first launched in September 2008 for Microsoft Windows before expanding to Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android. As of August 2026, Chrome holds approximately 69% of the global web browser market share across desktop, mobile, and tablet platforms. [11][13]
