A federal court in the Eastern District of Virginia sentenced Syrian hacker Ahmad Umar Agha to 42 months in prison on Thursday, SecurityWeek reported. Agha, who used the online pseudonym Th3Pr0, was affiliated with the Syrian Electronic Army cybercrime group. [1]

According to SecurityWeek, United States authorities charged Agha over 12 years ago, but he evaded law enforcement for more than a decade. Prosecutors said the hacking campaign targeted media organizations, private businesses, and government entities, including a high-profile compromise of the Associated Press Twitter account in 2013. [1]

The United States Department of Justice stated that figures close to Bashar al-Assad directed the hacking conspiracy, including the head of the General Intelligence Directorate of Syria, SecurityWeek reported. Assad served as the president of Syria from 2000 until his overthrow in 2024. [1][2]
