Japan's top cybersecurity official declared the country's first cyberspace emergency on October 9, 2026, Tech Times reported. The decision followed a wave of automated ransomware and data breach incidents that compromised personal records belonging to more than 14 million citizens. [1]

According to Tech Times, a single cyberattack on the cloud provider IDC Frontier cascaded through 495 businesses within hours. Security experts noted that the incident demonstrates a significant shift in the scale and capabilities of automated cyberattacks. [1]

The emergency declaration came after Japan registered 86 recorded cyber incidents during the month of September 2026 alone, Tech Times reported. PCMag and SSBCrack both reported on the declaration of the emergency following the sudden surge in cyberattacks against major Japanese companies. [1][2][3]
