The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber 825 million euros for using fully automated systems to make decisions regarding its drivers, Live Law reported. Uber suspended or deactivated driver accounts that had low customer ratings or were suspected of fraud without offering drivers insight into how the decisions were made. [1]
According to Live Law, the ride-hailing company violated the European Union General Data Protection Regulation. The regulation requires meaningful human oversight for automated decisions that carry serious consequences for individuals. [1][3]
The 825 million euro fine represents the second-largest penalty issued under the General Data Protection Regulation, Live Law reported. It is surpassed only by a 1.2 billion euro fine imposed on Meta by Irish regulators in 2023, and it marks the fourth penalty levied against Uber. [1][3]
The General Data Protection Regulation is an administrative regulation that governs information privacy within the European Union and the European Economic Area, as well as the transfer of personal data outside those regions. The law aims to increase control for individuals over their personal data and simplify rules for international business. [3]
In short
- The Dutch Data Protection Authority fined Uber 825 million euros over automated driver suspensions.
- Uber deactivated accounts with low ratings or suspected fraud without providing transparency or human oversight.
- The penalty is the second-largest fine ever issued under the General Data Protection Regulation.
