Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered details of three cyber attacks targeting Japanese organizations that utilized artificial intelligence to assist human operators or run automated campaigns. The Hacker News reported that security firm TrendAI analyzed three exposed server environments used by hackers to conduct the operations. [1]

The exposed environments contained reconnaissance tools, attack scripts, target lists, logs, command histories, and attack results. The Hacker News reported that these operations used CyberStrikeAI, which leveraged 44 AI agents to automate hacking tasks against targets in Japan. [1]

An AI agent is an artificial intelligence program that can independently make decisions, pursue goals, and take actions without continuous input from human programmers. TrendAI described these newly discovered campaigns as distinct from earlier attacks that used ARTEX, an autonomous AI penetration testing framework that previously targeted entities in Japan and South Korea.
