South Korean online retailer Coupang has filed lawsuits to contest a fine of 620 billion South Korean won over a major data leak, DataBreaches.net, The Korea Times, and Asiae reported. The legal action follows a November 2025 security breach that exposed the personal information of millions of users. [1][2][3]
According to DataBreaches.net, Coupang issued a public apology in December 2025 for the breach. The security incident affected more than 33 million customers of the e-commerce platform. [1]
DataBreaches.net noted that the incident has remained in the news cycle for nine months and serves as a case study in poor incident response. The legal challenge addresses both the data leak penalties and other regulatory violations, according to Asiae. [1][3]
Coupang was founded in 2010 by Bom Kim, a Harvard University graduate who initially launched the venture as a daily deals platform in Seoul. [5]
