A Chinese speaking hacker launched cyberattacks against the South Korean financial sector earlier this month using the ARTEX AI penetration testing suite and Claude agents, BleepingComputer reported. The operations targeted several major institutions, including Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, and Hana Bank. BleepingComputer added that security firm CrowdStrike monitored the incident. [1][6]

The intrusions exposed personal data and credit card information belonging to bank clients, according to BleepingComputer. The incidents also caused temporary system outages across affected institutions. Following the breaches, the South Korean government convened an emergency meeting and called for immediate security enhancements across critical IT systems. [1]

An AI agent is an artificial intelligence program capable of pursuing goals, using software tools, and taking actions with autonomy. Following the attacks on the South Korean banks, the Chinese developer rendered the ARTEX AI agent closed source, Technology Org, The Straits Times, and Tekedia reported. Tekedia noted that this decision came after CrowdStrike reported the cyberattacks. [2][5][6][9]

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is located in East Asia and has a population of approximately 52 million people. Technology Org, The Paypers, Security Affairs, and The Straits Times all confirmed that the ARTEX agentic tool was utilized during the financial sector attacks. [2][3][4][5][8]
