Japanese video game publisher Capcom disclosed a security breach affecting more than 11.7 million CAPCOM ID accounts globally. Malwarebytes Labs, Security Affairs, GAMINGbible, Mezha.net, Help Net Security, and FRVR all reported that an unauthorized party gained access to the online membership service. [1][2][4][5][6][7]

The compromised information includes account email addresses, account activity details, and IP addresses, Malwarebytes Labs reported. A smaller set of records contained personal details such as dates of birth. Additionally, passwords were changed without permission on 196 accounts. [1]

Capcom stated that credit card information was not affected during the incident. The company has not confirmed that original customer passwords were compromised. However, Malwarebytes Labs and FRVR reported that Capcom is warning users to watch their inboxes for potential fraudulent emails and phishing attempts. [1][7]

Capcom is a major video game developer known for franchises including Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter. As FTMQ Security reported earlier, another Japanese entertainment company faced a major breach recently when Daiichi Kosho announced that a malware infection at a contractor exposed over 8.7 million records.
